Well, I first started with a blog.
Now I've started to tweet.
Of course, you must be

using Twitter.com in order to tweet.

Huh, what's a tweet?
It's a posting to twitter and
is limited to 140 characters
and spaces

Twitter is one of the Web 2.0
methods of keeping in touch
with the world of one's followers
and learning about what they're
doing, reading, thinking
almost instantaneously.

If they are following your
tweets, they'll know the same
about you.

Just go to the site, sign up and let
your friends know. You can even
check up on others using twitter.
Barack Obama was using it up until
January of this year.

There are many interesting uses,
such as seeing who others are following
and being able to read their tweets.
If you find an interesting tweeter,
you can follow them too.

Painless Backups: On that old USB hard drive you've got over there!

A great new item was introduced at the CES show in Las Vegas last week.
It's called Clickfree Transformer Cable and costs,
as soon as you can find it, approximately $60.
Here's what it looks like.

Just plug it into one of your handy dandy USB ports and you're off.
Your system will recognize and deal with the driver issues.

The maufacturer says, “No software to install or setup. Works right out-of-the-box. Just
plug the Clickfree Transformer into the computer, then plug any
external USB hard drive into the other end of the Transformer
and it converts the external hard drive into a Clickfree backup drive.
Automatically starts, finds, organizes and backs up all of your data
onto the external hard drive.”

“Backing up personal content is becoming more important as people
turn their photos, movies and other content into digital formats,” said
Tim Bajarin, president and principal analyst of Creative Strategies.
“The Clickfree Transformer Cable now makes it very simple to take any
hard drive and turn it into a highly personal back up device.”

I did a brief search on google, but couldn't yet find it for sale.

I've taken the plunge with twitter which allows you to post
up to 140 characters in, sort of, a live stream of consciousness
online diary or updating medium for one's friends and
followers.

(It turns out that, because one can post from one's
cellphone, that some people actually made postings
during the Mumbai tragedy.)

Of course, I'd like to go over the limit.
There are many "twitter type" gadgets
and applications which have been developed
to do amazing things with and for our
twitter postings.

One category is shorteners which allow
more than 140 characters to be typed and
then the post is re-configured to show the
beginning words and then has a link added.
This link contains the rest of your comments.

Now the title of my blog is "life as a case study".
Of course, neither of these two services would
work for me this morning!!!
I entered and checked my twitter credentials properly,
but no shortened posts.

Learning how to screen capture and post with ScribeFire.

I am now including a screen capture - just by selecting - from
Truemors.nowpublic.com. This will allow me to post with
image content and then add my own photos of choice.
I have linkified the truemors post .
The image was offered to me by Zemanta.
I am now experimenting to see if I can add
another photo to this paragraph.

Here is my frustrated result after
much effort and images jumping
in and out of the blog.

It seems as if the photos prefer to be
on the right.

Flying Spaghetti Monster Tree Ornament

If the same old decorative glass balls hanging from the Christmas tree
(or Festivus pole) seem drab and lackluster, consider switching out
your glass balls for meatballs. The Flying Spaghetti Monster
tree ornament features a booglie eyed pasta monster that represents the
faux Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, created in 2005 by an
Oregon graduate student protesting the decision by the Kansas State
Board of Education to require the teaching of intelligent design
alongside biological evolution. Yay for politics on the tree! Look out
for the Dick Cheney on a ribbon ornament!

Now I have just added the ScribeFire extension for Firefox.
I thought that I would have been able to select copy from
a page and add text to it. Apparently, that is not the case.
I've also added the Zemanta extension which I used for
the posts of the middle of the year.

Note that you are reading an edited version of my
original post: it turns out that ScribeFire does
allow for selecting content from web pages. I have
added this second paragraph, the photo to the
right and the links above with Zemanta.

As I remember from my previous use of Zemanta,
I will not be able to add a second photo to this post.
But, ScribeFire will allow for additional photos to appear.
I will try that with my next post.

The Eyes Have It!

Tonight Sarah Palin did just that: she looked us straight in the
eyes and told us from her heart what she feels about and for us!

She has personally turned the race for the presidency around once again.

Sandbox In - Sandbox Out

Well, it's been some time since I have deleted my sandbox and have regained 2.5 GB of harddrive space.

I currently use an older version of sandboxie.com to
protect my computer against assaults from so-called
driveby websites, meandering trojans and spyware.

So you've never heard of the concept of a sandbox?
It's like having a virtual computer within your real computer.

Imagine you were playing in the box shown to
the right. And, when you were finished you got
up, brushed yourself off and walked away clean.
That's the concept of using a sandbox on your computer.

Now suppose something undesirable landed in your sandbox, you
could just dump the contents of your sandbox out and get rid of it without
any residue or complications.

You also can recover from your virtual computer to your real
computer, thus saving files which you have downloaded into your sandbox.

To paraphrase the Las Vegas phrase, "What happens in your
sandbox, stays in your sandbox." And, you can delete your sandbox too!

Lavasoft, the firewall company, has recently
delivered its own version of a sandbox and
google hired engineers from Greenborder,
a competitor of sandboxie to design
the sandbox concept into its new Chrome browser.

Sandboxie is free...need I say more?

Image via WikipediaThat's Flock 1.2, the new web browser based upon
Firefox 2. It's called a social browser; designed
for people who like to be linked - or linkable - to
their friends and blogs. There are many interesting
and other useful features including the safety aspects of
Firefox.

It's use of RAM is moderate - perhaps, after
an hour a little more than Firefox.

One of the features I really like is that if there
is a searchable field on a webpage, Flock will
offer to load it into your search bar for later use.
This way you can search a page without actually
having to go to it.

Many, but not all, of the updated extensions
can be downloaded from the Flock site and lots
of Firefox extensions will work too.

I'm using it more than Firefox 3 these days.

There is a beta to Flock 2.0 available, but
I'm going to wait.

How can I post without an input box?

All of a sudden today, my input box has disappeared. First it shows when I select to make a new post, then it disappears.

I am posting to my preview window now. Yes, as the forum says, I have cleared my cache and cookies, but to no avail. By the way, I am using FF 3.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or are you experiencing
the same?

July 4th.....Freedom and Firefox

What's a poor boy to do, but join with the other 30 million
or so other users and muddle through the addons, extensions
and themes wars. Many of us have been using the previous
incarnations of FF... and for good reasons: extensions, or as
Mozilla calls them, addons.

But many of my previous favorites just won't install,
even if updated by their designers, after June 17th.

It's a comprehensive page listing the various messages I, and
presumably you, have received accompanying failed addons
installation attempts. Frankly, some of their suggestions are
understandable (to me), some aren't and some might
have some consequences to our overall systems.

What do you think?

Firefox 3 and extension(s) problems

Well, we all were waiting for it...Firefox 3 to come out of beta.
And so it did. Yes, it loads faster and doesn't use quite as much RAM.
Those aspects are of importance to me.

But, and you knew, that it was coming, what is up with the extensions?
I used to have 40 + in my FF 2 installation. Now I can't get more than
15 extensions to load and function. I even have an RSS feed with the
latest extensions info and they don't load either; they are either rejected or installation fails.

I must admit that I run FF 3 in a sandboxed browser (sandboxie.com).
But, that has never made a difference before.

I read some of the daily FF oriented blogs and can't find anything
written about extensions and related problems. Also, I receive a daily google alert
related to extensions and associated problems - nothing there either.

What's been your experience?

A funny thing happened to me today while doing some in-person banking.
Had made a couple of debit transactions over the weekend and wanted
to know how much cash was available in my account.

There was a gas pump purchase and a visit to a local
retail store. One would think that the teller could look
at my account and see the exact amount of cash I had used.
Not true.

She hadn't checked all of the available screens and the fuel
company had only withdrawn $1.00 to test my account.
That actual amount might be available in several days.
The teller actually incorrectly mixed two purchases together
and did not inform me of this.

I left the bank and returned to explain my displeasure
with the customer service manager. She had printed
my account info and was going to go over it with all of the
tellers.

One would think that this is common enough to
have as part of standard training.

It's important to ask if there are any other screens to check
or are there any that haven't been checked yet. Also,
are you looking at a total as opposed to individual entries?

Of course, as the customer service manager suggested,
I could have kept a register with me at the pump.
